Choosing a session length

How long should a massage be?

A 60-minute massage is a reasonable starting point if you want general body work. Consider 30 minutes for one main area, or 90 minutes for general work with extra focus time. A 120-minute session gives you more time, but a longer appointment is not automatically the better choice.

Your priorities

How do you choose a massage length?

Start by naming what you want from the appointment. A short visit can focus on one main area. If you want several areas covered and extra attention somewhere, allow more time.

Coverage depends on pressure, your preferences and any areas to avoid. Ask the front desk what is realistic for your booking.

Short sessions

When is a 30-minute massage a good fit?

Thirty minutes can work when you have one main priority, such as your neck and shoulders. It can also be a manageable way to try body massage if you are unsure how you will feel on the table.

A 30-minute body massage is $50. If you want a separate foot session, foot massage is available in 30 or 60 minutes. The 60-minute foot option costs less than two separate 30-minute foot sessions.

Tell the therapist which areas matter most so you can agree on how to use the time.

Length comparison

Use this table to narrow your choice, then explain your priorities when you call. A longer session gives the therapist more time; it does not guarantee a better health outcome.

Body massage session lengths
LengthWhen to consider it
30 minutes You want one main area worked on or prefer a short visit.
60 minutes You want general body work or more time on a specific area.
90 minutes You want general work plus extra attention to selected areas.
120 minutes You prefer an extended session and are comfortable on the table for longer.

More focus time

Should you book 60 or 90 minutes?

An hour gives you room for general body work or a more focused session. Ninety minutes is worth considering when you want both. Explain your priorities before booking so you don't expect more than the available time allows.

A 90-minute body massage is $100. It gives you 30 minutes more than an hour and costs the same as two separate 30-minute body massages. See 90-minute appointments and the full price list.

AMTA’s massage and health overview discusses massage as part of health and wellness. It does not recommend one session length for everyone.

If you want both foot and body work

The foot and body combinations are 30 minutes of foot massage plus 30, 60 or 90 minutes of body massage. Ask about a combination if that matches how you want to divide the appointment.

Extended sessions

When should you consider a 120-minute massage?

Two hours is the longest body massage or deep tissue session on the menu. It may suit you if you enjoy longer appointments and want more time across several areas.

Think about whether you are comfortable lying in one position for longer. Mention any positioning needs when booking. You can still ask to pause or stop during the appointment.

Massage research

Does a longer massage work better?

There is no single research-backed length for every wellness massage. NCCIH’s research summary reviews studies with different methods, health concerns and schedules. Their findings do not establish a universal choice between 60 and 90 minutes.

Massage may help with relaxation and everyday muscle tension. It is not a substitute for medical care. NCCIH’s massage guidance recommends speaking with a health care provider if you are unsure whether massage is appropriate for you. Its overview of mind and body practices provides broader background on complementary approaches.
