The short answer

What to expect at your first massage: discuss your preferences and health concerns, get ready in privacy, then tell the therapist what feels comfortable. You can ask to adjust the pressure or stop. At Crystal Massage, body massage comes in 30, 60, 90 or 120 minutes.

Before you arrive

What should you do before a first massage?

When you book, say that it is your first massage and mention any questions you have. Allow about 10 minutes before the appointment so you have time to explain your preferences without rushing.

Tell the therapist about recent injuries or surgery, medical conditions, medicines that may affect massage safety, and areas you want avoided. If you are pregnant, ask your health care provider and the front desk before booking.

NCCIH’s massage safety tips recommend discussing massage with your health care provider when you are unsure whether it is appropriate. The front desk cannot diagnose a health problem.

Clothing and privacy

What do you wear during a massage?

Wear clothes that are easy to change into and out of. For a body massage, undress only to a level you are comfortable with. You can keep underwear on and ask the therapist how that will affect work on the areas you have requested.

Ask how the sheet or towel will be used to keep you covered. The therapist should explain the process and give you privacy to change. Tell them if a position or any part of the setup makes you uncomfortable.

If you prefer to stay dressed

Ask about a foot massage. Shoes and socks come off, and you can remain dressed for the session. Confirm the setup and any clothing suggestions when you call.

You are welcome to ask questions and request changes throughout your appointment.

A quiet session

Do you need to talk during a massage?

You do not have to make conversation. Say that you would prefer a quiet session if that helps you relax. The therapist may still check whether the pressure or position feels comfortable.

Falling asleep can happen, and you do not need to apologize for it. Stay comfortable and speak up whenever you need a change, a break or an explanation.

AMTA’s massage and health overview discusses massage as one approach to general well-being. Your visit can simply be time to relax; you do not need a specific complaint to ask about an appointment.

Your comfort

How do you ask for a pressure change?

Be direct: “Lighter, please,” “Could you use a little more pressure?” or “Please skip that area.” These are useful instructions. Tell the therapist as soon as you notice discomfort.

Ask the therapist to stop if you feel sharp, burning or shooting pain. You do not need to tolerate pain to get value from a massage. NCCIH’s massage overview notes that massage can have risks, especially vigorous work or for people with certain health concerns.

Before and after

What should you do before and after the session?

For comfort, avoid arriving immediately after a large meal if lying down would bother you. You do not need a special diet or routine for a wellness massage. Follow any advice from your health care provider.

Take your time getting up and let the therapist know if you feel lightheaded or unwell. Some soreness can happen, but severe, worsening or persistent symptoms need medical advice. Massage is not a substitute for medical care.

Payment

What should you ask about payment and tipping?

Check the session price before booking and ask which payment methods are accepted. A 60-minute body massage is $70; a 30-minute foot massage is $30. The massage price list shows the other options.

Ask the front desk about tipping and accepted payment methods before your appointment.

Booking your visit

How do you choose a first massage appointment?

A 30-minute body massage is $50 and can focus on one main area. An hour gives you more time for general body work. Read how to choose a massage length if you are comparing options.

You can ask a therapist about training and relevant experience before booking. The City of Wichita sets local requirements through Chapter 3.55 of the city code.
